101 Prosperity Lane: Cycle Eight [Proudmoore Valley, Derico Family] — Mao @ 8:25 pm

Residents: Davina Derico, Serena Derico, Rex Derico

Serena: Guess what? Its me again! Yes, I know… it took me long enough, right? Well stuff around here is kinda chaotic at the moment. Raising a kid that has no mother or father is real big issue. Well… Davina does most of it, but I help, too! I mean, he’s my nephew, too. I gotta make sure the kid has a little fun. He’s a real wet blanket. Poor thing wouldn’t know a good time if it smacked him upside the head.

Even so, he sure is cute. I don’t want any kids of my own, but I don’t mind caring for him now and again. He and Davina are real close. It figures, because they’re both crazy intelligent. I’ll bet Rex’s IQ will double when he gets older. Which is good and bad… ‘cause you know, he’s alienated enough as it is without having that holding him back. I don’t see him as a social butterfly… he barely talks, even to us.

I’ve been trying to help him come out of his shell, but it just doesn’t seem like it’ll work. He’s off in his own little world. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think he was plotting. Bah. What do I know?

Of course, they can’t stay cute kids forever. His birthday was pretty uneventful, as he wanted it. Like I said… he isn’t very social. Anyway, looks like he’ll have to adjust… because he looks quite a bit like his father with a good mix of his mom, too. I guess what I’m trying to say is that he fell off the pretty tree. Add in that strange mystique he carries around with him, and we’re going to have some serious problems.

Luckily, he’s more interested in books than girls. That figures. He’s completely oblivious to any special attention he receives from members of the opposite gender. Its either that, or he just doesn’t care. But let’s be serious, what teenage boy wouldn’t care?! He’s a weird kid.

It wasn’t long before he was asking about the Academy just outside of town. Davina was all for it, but I wasn’t too sure. Wouldn’t that just seperate him even more from normal kids his age? Davina shot that down. Our other relatives had all attended the Academy, and you know how the Derico’s are with their IQ’s… just enough to get by. So that meant there were normal kids there, too.

So, the headmaster was called. I wasn’t there for the fun, but from what I hear, Rex did quite a bit of schmoozing. Apparently it worked, ‘cause next thing I know, he’s got a nice uniform and everything. Well, how about that. Guess he’s not as introverted as I thought…

The Academy was great, but it still wasn’t much of a challenge for him. So he was forced to socialize to pass the time. Girls followed him home constantly. It was pretty funny to watch. Rex all but ignored them while they tried so hard to get his attention away from his homework or whatever book he might’ve been reading.

That was until one day when his cousin Diana (they’ve been best friends since they were kids) dropped by. She brought a friend with her… Jenna Jeffress (Proudmoore). Yeah, you know, the Mayor’s kid… she goes to the Academy, too. Apparently her and Diana are real close… Diana is her ‘right hand’ girl or whatever those little clique chicks call their lackeys these days. The point is, Jenna noticed Rex and Diana was more than happy to help her friend.

Jenna was quite the girl. She’s a lot like her mom, from what I’ve heard… very driven. Her and Diana were always around after school and Jenna would do her best to drive away any girl that happened to follow Rex home. She was a girl on a mission.

Being an ‘it’ girl means nothing to our beloved little Rex, though. He was still indifferent. He treated all the girls the same, even Jenna. Despite her best efforts, she could not seem to sway his attention towards her and only her. Poor Rex, he was drowning in females. Normal boys would love it, but he was getting frustrated. All he wanted to do was study and prepare for college and these girls just wouldn’t leave him alone!

Eventually he had a talk with Diana, who agreed to not bring Jenna over everyday. That helped, but Jenna didn’t give up entirely. I really pity the poor kid now… those Proudmoore’s don’t like to lose.

Rex couldn’t wait for college. Davina was so proud, and I guess I was, too. Sure he may not be as fun-loving as me, but he’s got brains… guess that’s a good thing, right? Plus, he’s got a swarm of female followers. Now there’s an achievement! Too bad they don’t give scholarships for that, heh.

Speaking of which, he got quite a few. Pretty good for a kid with no parents, huh? Yeah, he wasn’t doing so bad. I’m sure Sade would be proud. Now if only he’d just get rid of that big chip he carries around. It isn’t obvious… but when you see him all the time like I do, its hard not to notice. The kid still hasn’t gotten over his mother’s death.

It took a lot of persuading by Diana and I, but eventually we got Rex to go downtown. Diana drug him off to some hippie hangout one Saturday night, intent on showing him how to have fun. Unfortunately, she’d forgotten about the female followers. She’d told Jenna to meet them there, but hadn’t expected others to show up. Jenna’s anger at this was obvious. Neither her nor Diana got to speak to Rex all night. By the time he got home, he was socially exhausted, complaining that never again would we talk him into such a stupid idea.

Pffft. This kid needs his head checked.

After that, he spent a lot of time holed up in his room. No clue what he did in there. Diana would drop by now and again, but she was a year younger, so she still had her senior year of highschool to look forward. Rex spent his entire summer after graduating reading and studying obscure things. I thought it was weird, Davina was just proud he would be going to college.

One day, Jenna came over by herself. I wasn’t really surprised, she only lives just down the street. She and Rex spoke for awhile. I figured I’d give him a break and tell her to get lost. I wish I hadn’t, because Rex was absolutely livid after she left. I guess I embarassed him or something, who knows. Teenagers are so strange.

He should be thanking me! She didn’t come around anymore after that.

Finally the day came when he was ready to head off to college. He and Diana said their goodbyes, exchanging odd inside jokes that neither I nor Davina understood. Apparently Jenna Jeffress and Elle Derico would be joining him on the ride there. He spent a lot of time saying goodbye to the house, since this was likely the last time he’d ever see it. He and Davina would be leaving when he graduated. They’d move into their own house.

I wasn’t going to be alone, though. Kitty Derico, my neice, would be joining me very soon. She’d just graduated and didn’t want to live with her father and twin brother. Hey, gotta keep the Bachelorette pad tradition alive! If there’s a girl without a man, she’ll likely end up here, haha. This house is a party pad… which is why Davina and Rex are leaving.

Davina isn’t a big partier anymore. Life has been pretty hard for her. Now she’s stepped into the land of the old and gray. Man, how time flies. Soon… it’ll be me with gray hair! Now that’s a scary thought.

She left not long after. I’ll miss her, we had a lot of fun. But… you know, things are always changing. Gotta accept it and go with the flow. Now I’m gonna go enjoy the next few days of having the house all to myself!
