It wasn’t long after that Lila had a birthday. She became a strikingly lovely young lady and Kitty couldn’t have been prouder. Unfortunately, it also meant that the truth was inching closer and closer…
A few days after Lila’s birthday, the phone rang. Lila was home alone working on her piano lessons when she heard it. Coming in from the patio, she picked up the phone.
“Hello?”
“Kitty?”
“Um, no… she’s not in right now. Can I take a message?”
“No… no. That’s fine. Thank you.”
The line went dead. Lila was perplexed. Why would a man be phoning for her mother and why did he seem so shocked? If he was a friend of Kitty’s then surely he knew she had a daughter!

When Kitty arrived home from work that night, she found Lila sound asleep. Ever since Serena’s death, Kitty had taken it upon herself to get a job. She enjoyed it, aside from the odd hours. She was rarely able to spend time with Lila, who was already having visions of college. Kitty was feeling her age creeping up on her and hoped that work would ease her mind.
